The focus of this research line is to obtain (and maintain) an optimal spatial distribution of saline and freshwater (saline water where possible, freshwater where essential) by developing models and control tools for strategic and operational water management. Instead of using scarce freshwater to reach such a distribution, saline water is used to push freshwater to critical areas. Special attention will be given to salt concentrations at root zone levels, essential for food production and nature development. Here especially monovalent salts can be detrimental.
